The Veerplein has a rich history. It was once the regular arrival and departure point of the ferries in Vlaardingen, an important aspect of the local economy and culture. Today, Veerplein is a lively area with stores, a library, a cinema and a market. Our project aimed to preserve this historical and cultural value while striving for sustainability and improving livability. In summary, our project to make the Veerplein in Vlaardingen more sustainable was a balanced combination of respect for history, attention to sustainability and focus on the future. By using modern technologies and sustainable materials, we created a space that is both functional and pleasant, contributing to the quality of life of Vlaardingen residents.
Exam score: 8,1
The Veerplein sustainability project in Vlaardingen was an extensive and carefully planned initiative. It began with a preliminary study of the flow of the area, conducted using drones. This technology allowed us to get a detailed picture of the current situation and helped us identify possible areas for improvement.
Next, we focused on making the square more sustainable. We chose to implement green roofs and permeable pavers. Green roofs have multiple benefits, including reducing heat island effects, improving air quality and providing habitat for wildlife. Permeable pavers help manage stormwater, reduce the load on the sewer system and prevent flooding. An important aspect of our project was the design of the center plaza. We chose a fence around the plaza, which creates a safe play area for children. This play area is designed to be easily erected and dismantled so that the plaza can be used for the market when needed.
